Within the world of construction, there are processes that help to improve and create more and better pieces for construction or for the installation of steel pieces that are necessary for a process or to provide a service or the realization of a product.

A little-known but widely used process is the wire drawing process. In the following lines, we will tell you more about this process such as; what is it? What is it for? And some advantages that you can obtain from the process itself.

What is wire drawing?

It is an operation of reducing the section of a wire, this goes through a cone-shaped hole that is processed in different time of materials that are used to form through the wire drawing process.

In other words, wire drawing is when a cold wire is stretched and can be done with copper wires, steel, brass or any other ductile metal or alloy. Using carbon or tungsten dies or wire drawers, materials much stronger and more resistant than the material to be worked on, a certain hardness is given to the material, which substantially improves the quality and possibilities of its mechanical characteristics.

In other words, the stretching of the cable is done by a series of machines in the shape of rollers or rounds that are responsible for crushing the wire of different materials. Through a plate with different holes that reduce and crush them progressively until reaching the indicated one.

The reduction, stretching or wire drawing can be performed for different factors, such as the diameter of the bars that are going to work and their length, improving the finishes or making it fit in a certain place. For example, when we have bars 15 mm wide, a wire drawing treatment is usually given to improve surface finishes or to reduce them by up to 50%.

Advantages of wire drawing

As mentioned, wire drawing is done cold, so it does not require the material to be heated before or during its process, making the process itself much easier to perform. Below, we present a series of advantages of cold forming that count as part of the advantages of wire drawing.

Dimensional precision

The surface quality is much higher, so the dimensional precision also increases and materials much more in line with the objective to be pursued are obtained, especially at the moment where it is not possible to make a specific material and it is required in the final composition.

Increase in hardness

By going through a specific process, materials transform, so the hardness and resistance of drawn materials increase substantially, creating and obtaining materials much more resistant to inclemencies and that prevent them from breaking or cracking so easily.

Increase in malleability

On the other hand, the ability to produce thin sections and mold them becomes much easier thanks to the wire drawing process, so it is advisable to perform when a piece does not fit or is required to be made larger.

At Ulbrinox you can get wire drawing materials or the wire drawing itself. Make a budget and discover everything you can do for your jobs. We are waiting for you!
