Type 301 stainless steel is an austenitic stainless steel capable of achieving high mechanical strength and ductility by cold working. This steel is not hardenable by heat treatment, is non-magnetic in the annealed condition and begins to become magnetized with cold working. Type 301 is preferred over 302 and 304 in the hardened condition because it achieves high elongation combined with high strength, which facilitates its fabrication and broadens its applications.

Type 302 stainless steel is an austenitic stainless steel capable of achieving high mechanical strength and ductility by cold working. This steel is not hardenable by heat treatment, is non-magnetic in the annealed condition and begins to increase in magnetism with cold working.

Type 304 is the most widely used of the austenitic stainless steels, it is non-magnetic in the annealed condition and becomes magnetic when cold work is applied. Type 304 is generally used in the annealed condition because of its good combination of corrosion resistance and formability. It is recommended whenever possible to change to type 301 if hardening is required because it does not harden easily.

General applications requiring corrosion resistance, medical and surgical tools, flexible hoses, computer parts, electronic parts, jewelry, seals, tubing, architectural parts and a variety of stamped parts.

Type 304-L is a low carbon Cr-Ni austenitic stainless steel, the purpose of the low carbon is to maintain good corrosion resistance in parts which are fabricated by welding and will not be subsequently annealed.

Medical and surgical applications, tubing, flexible hoses, architectural parts and a variety of stamped parts.

Type 310 is an austenitic Cr-Ni stainless steel with good oxidation resistance and high temperature resistance.

Applications requiring high corrosion resistance at high temperatures, furnace parts, turbine exhaust gas parts, heat exchangers, fuel refining equipment.

Type 316L is a Cr-Ni stainless steel with similar corrosion resistance to type 316 but with intergranular corrosion resistance for welding applications.

Applications for chemical process equipment, storage and transportation tanks, chemical process pipes, food processing, oil refining, paper processing, pharmaceutical industry equipment, textile industry parts, marine applications, flexible hoses.

Type 321 is an austenitic stainless steel containing titanium (Ti) which is recommended for fabricated welded parts which will not be subsequently annealed.

Used in automotive or aeronautical exhaust and hot gas handling parts, flexible couplings, pressure vessels, tubing, flexible hoses.

Type 409 is a ferritic stainless steel with moderate corrosion and heat resistance, with Ti added to stabilize it, it is not susceptible to heat treatment, it is magnetic and has good ductility, it is the alloy with the lowest chromium content of all the 400 series. It is a general purpose structural steel, it remains ferritic at high temperatures. It is used in applications where high quality appearance is not required.

It is mainly used in automotive exhaust system parts.

Type 420 stainless steel is a martensitic stainless steel that can achieve a good combination of corrosion resistance and hardness, it is magnetic in any condition, the maximum corrosion resistance is achieved in the hardened (quenched and tempered) condition.

Typical applications are in cutlery, surgical and dental instruments, scissors and any other instrument requiring sharpness and corrosion resistance.

Type 430 is a ferritic stainless steel with moderate corrosion and heat resistance, 430 is not hardenable by heat treatment, is magnetic and has good ductility; it can be easily formed.

Architectural applications, automotive parts, coins, kitchen utensils, bolts and screws, food processing equipment, burner parts, electronic parts and general applications requiring moderate corrosion and oxidation resistance.

Type 434 is a ferritic stainless steel that emerged as a modification of type 430. The addition of molybdenum increases its resistance to corrosion and chemical attack, it also provides good resistance to heat and oxidation above 816°C, as well as improved mechanical properties. Steel 434 is not hardenable by heat treatment, is magnetic and has good ductility; it can be easily formed.

Automotive moldings, combustion chambers, household appliances in contact with water and parts exposed to heat, it is also widely used in structural parts of nitric acid chemical handling equipment, refineries, applications in general that require moderate resistance to corrosion and oxidation.

Type 439 is a ferritic stainless steel stabilized with 17 %Cr. typically, stabilized with Titanium for better formability, with better mechanical properties and weldability than its predecessor 430. 439 steel is not hardenable by heat treatment, is magnetic and has good ductility; it can be easily formed. 439 steel has sufficient corrosion resistance in atmospheric and slightly aqueous conditions and can replace 300 series, aluminized materials or galvanized carbon steels.

Domestic water tanks and solar heaters, residential appliances, automotive exhaust system parts, general applications requiring moderate corrosion and oxidation resistance.

Type 441 is a heat resistant ferritic stainless steel that provides good corrosion and rust resistance for applications such as automotive exhaust system components. The double stabilization with niobium and titanium is to provide good weld ductility and resistance to intergranular corrosion in the weld heat-affected zone.

Applications in condensing heaters, exhaust system components: manifold, front pipes, muffler and catalytic converter covers. Welded structures exposed to moderately corrosive atmospheres or subjected to temperatures up to 950°C.
