The oxidation is often the worst enemy of metallic surfaces. We know how important it is to find a reliable supplier of stainless steel and aluminum in Mexico. That's why we want to talk to you about what we do best.

Our stainless steel and aluminum are of the highest quality for your processes and applications. Therefore, we invite you to learn more about us on our website, remember that all our alloys are designed for their maximum lifespan.

In this article, we will talk more about rust prevention in stainless steel. Remember that there are alloys that are more resistant to oxidation, so we invite you to read this blog to discover more.

What is rust?

Most metals corrode due to chemical reactions with the environment.

When Fe (iron) and iron alloys corrode, it is called oxidation. The result of corrosion is what we know as rust.

Origin of rust

Oxygen is a very electronegative element, causing it to form stable bonds with virtually all other elements to form oxides.

Iron is a basic metal, which means it is more prone to give up electrons.

When iron and oxygen come together, the oxygen traps the electrons from the iron and, therefore, they adhere and iron oxide is formed. This oxidation occurs where oxygen meets the surface, creating a thin film on the substrate, this inert layer prevents more oxygen from coming into contact and reacting with the metal.

Cleaning and rust prevention

At Ulbrinox we recognize that oxidation makes metal structures brittle and fragile, which compromises their safety, in addition to a loss of aesthetic value and economic loss due to having to replace oxidized metal structures.

Therefore, we offer information on products and processes for the prevention of oxidation and its cleaning according to the different types of coatings, including steel. Reminding you that there are different types of maintenance that can be performed.

The stainless steel is a material that due to its physicochemical characteristics is resistant to oxidation and corrosion, which allows it to be exposed and tolerate extreme temperatures.

In addition, it is currently considered as a material with a long lifespan, it has an aesthetic finish and provides security without constant maintenance. Therefore, if you are looking for stainless steel alloys of the best quality, do not hesitate to contact us.

Oxidation in stainless steel

Stainless steel is an iron alloy that comprises 10.5 to 30% chromium. Stainless steel obtains the characteristic of stainless thanks to the chromium-rich oxide that is found in the form of an invisible and adherent external film (Cr2O3), which can also contain nickel, manganese, and nitrogen.

Thanks to these properties, stainless steel has become a fundamental material in the various branches of the industry. Any material that contains iron, including stainless steel, in contact with oxygen oxidizes.

The difference is that it is called stainless, as the way the oxide forms is special, since stainless steel oxidizes forming a thin thin layer of chromium oxide, this layer is usually greenish, which remains inert without increasing the volume.

Besides, if this layer were to tear, more chromium would be produced to oxidize, therefore, a new protective layer would appear. In the steel industry, we call this phenomenon stainless regeneration.

How to prevent oxidation in stainless steel?

At Ulbrinox we recommend preventing steel oxidation, starting with efficient care and maintenance of stainless steel.

Some general tips within the industry the best way to prevent oxidation is:

  • Clean and dry in the same direction as the polishing of the steel and not in the opposite direction or crossing it.

  • Clean surfaces of dust and fingerprints using soft cloths dampened with soapy water.

  • Use the same intervals performed for cleaning glass and crystals.

  • Never use sponges or wire scrubbers to clean it.

  • Absolutely avoid using abrasive products, as they produce scratch effects on the surface of stainless steel.

  • Avoid the use of products that contain chlorine. If necessary to use them, check that they are not very concentrated and that they do not remain in contact with the surfaces for a long time.

  • Always rinse abundantly with clean water the surfaces of the steel.

  • Clean the stainless steel periodically to maintain a desired appearance of the material and the corrosion-resistant layer in good condition.

  • Prevent the accumulation of dirt and dust that can become foci of corrosion and contamination of the material.

  • Preferably use sprays or specific polishing creams for stainless steel, as they facilitate cleaning and protect it.
